In 1843 Robert Loughridge arrived in the area and established a mission, named "Koweta". In 1867 after the Civil War, the Creek Indians adopted a constitution which divided their nation into six districts. Everything northeast of the Arkansas River, including Tulsa, became the Coweta district.

The area that is now known as Coweta became a part of the Creek Nation when the Five Civilized Tribes were shifted to Oklahoma from the Eastern United States. The city got its name from a Creek Indian war town. The American Indians first settled in the area permanently in 1840. Robert Loughridge arrived in the area in the year 1843.
Loughridge left Koweta to supervise Tullahassee Manual Labor School, which was completed in 1850. The Koweta school closed in 1861. 1843 on Broadway.
